01The day

A café day, in six sets.

A good café doesn't play the same thing at 7 AM and 7 PM. Each set is picked from the audio itself for one part of the day and printed as an order ticket: tap any line to play it, or press play and let the whole set run.

02Guide

What makes good coffee shop music?

Whether you're choosing music for a café or recreating one at home, the same four things decide whether it feels like a calm, warm room or just noise.

The short answer

Instrumental, warm and steady, mid-tempo and never loud, and changing gently as the day goes from the morning rush to closing time.

  1. 01

    Instrumental

No lyrics to compete with conversation, reading or the order you're calling over the grinder. Everything here is instrumental.

  2. 02

    Warm and soft-edged

Soft piano, warm synth pads and round sub-bass sit in a room without the hard, bright edges that tire people out over an afternoon.

  3. 03

    Steady, mid-tempo

A relaxed, even pulse feels unhurried without being sleepy. Sudden builds and drops pull attention away from the table.

  4. 04

    Changes with the day

Softer at opening, brighter at the rush, steadier at lunch, slower at closing. One playlist on repeat can't do that, which is why the board has six sets.

Playing it in your coffee shop, filming a café vlog or streaming a study session? All of this music is free under CC BY 4.0. Here are the rules in full.

Free to take away

  • All social media. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and the rest, including monetised videos, café vlogs, study streams, Shorts and Reels.
  • In your café. Background music in coffee shops, restaurants, bakeries, shops and offices, with a credit your customers can see.
  • Other projects too. Podcasts, games, apps, ads, client work and school projects.
  • Edit it to fit. Cut, loop or fade tracks, and say it's edited in the credit.
  • Credit Purrple Cat. “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0”.

Never

  • Never re-upload or release it on streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer or Tidal, through a distributor or any other route.
  • Never release remixes, samples or covers of it on streaming services either.
  • Never register it in Content ID or claim other people's videos with it.
  • Never pass it off as your own or sell the tracks as they are.

Why so strict about streaming? Re-uploads, remixes, samples and covers on Spotify, Apple Music and other services get fingerprinted, and then false Content ID claims hit everyone who uses the music properly. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear when you use them as intended.

05FAQ

Questions at the counter.

What is coffee shop music?
The relaxed instrumental music you hear in a good café: warm, unhurried and pleasant enough to notice, never so loud or busy that it takes over the conversation. On this site it's Purrple Cat's dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo lofi, arranged into six sets for the café's day.
Can I play this music in my café, coffee shop or restaurant?
Yes, free. Everything here is licensed under CC BY 4.0, which allows public and commercial use, including background music in a café, shop, restaurant or office. Credit Purrple Cat where your customers can see it, for example a small card by the counter or a line on your menu or website: “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0”.
Can I use it in my YouTube videos, streams and Reels?
Yes. It's free on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and all other social media, including monetised videos, café vlogs, study-with-me streams and long ambience videos. Put “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0” in the description. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear.
Can I upload it to Spotify or other streaming services?
No. Never re-upload or release the music, or remixes, samples or covers of it, on Spotify, Apple Music or any other streaming service, through a distributor or any other route. Those uploads get fingerprinted and cause false Content ID claims for everyone who uses the music properly.
Are these the full tracks? Can I download them?
Yes. Every player plays the whole track, never a short preview, and every one of the 343 tracks has a free MP3 download (192 kbps, tagged with the title, album and licence). Each set can also be downloaded as an .m3u8 playlist for VLC or the music player on your café's computer.
How does the board know what's pouring now?
It reads the clock on your own device, nothing else: opening up before 9 AM, the morning rush until noon, the midday crowd until 2 PM, the slow afternoon until 4 PM, rain on the window until 7 PM and last orders after that. You can play any set at any time.
How were the sets picked?
From the audio itself. Every track was measured for tempo, loudness, brightness (how much high-frequency energy it has) and steadiness. Each set scores the whole catalogue against its own rules, adds each album's mood, leaves out the spooky albums, takes no more than four tracks from one release and orders the picks so neighbouring tracks feel alike.
What does the music sound like?
Dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo lofi by Purrple Cat: soft piano, warm synth pads, deep sub-bass and slow, steady grooves. Fully instrumental.
Is it good music for studying in a coffee shop?
For a lot of people, yes: it's instrumental, steady and calm. Try the Slow afternoon set for studying and reading, or Rain on the window for something cozier. Keep it quiet enough that the music stays in the background.
